Segun Adeyina has always been committed to educating himself so he could build a fruitful career and pass that knowledge onto others in the community. He obtained a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Akron and a Master of Science in Management Information Systems from Lawrence Technological University. After receiving his degrees he went on to work in corporate America for Fortune 500 companies like General Motors and Hewlett-Packard. He also started his own business, providing IT Consulting Services with a focus in Strategic Planning and Project Management.
His experience in the industry enabled him to secure positions as an Adjunct Professor with the University of Phoenix and Wayne County Community College District where he taught Networking, Security, Project Management, Mathematics, and Computer courses. Over 30 years of experience in the IT industry, teaching college courses and raising his 3 children has given him the ability to better understand what requirements students need to meet if they want to have true success in the U.S. workforce, especially the IT field.
How He Plans to Use His Education & Experience to Help Gwinnett County Schools if He Wins
Segun is an active participant in many Gwinnett County community initiatives. This helped him realize that forging a change takes more than being active in the community. You must also understand and be a part of the political process. His children attend Gwinnett County Schools and he’s an advocate for youth in the community. All these things lend to his experience in effectively working with the residents of Gwinnett County. As an experienced educator (working at the collegiate level) he also knows how important it is to effectively train students so they can become skilled workers.

As a member of the Gwinnett County Board of Education, he wants to help better train students to enter into a Skilled Technical Trade field, especially for communities with more challenging economic support. He says that the IT field lacks talented and skilled workers and that most of the jobs are outsourced abroad. He believes the key to changing this will be properly educating and helping kids cultivate the skills needed to qualify for positions in the industry. Segun believes that all children should have access to education and he intends to “Restore Hope for Gwinnett Children, Parents, and Educators.”
He not only wants to bring his own initiatives to the forefront, he also wants to take time to understand the needs of the community and what they feel needs to be done. Addressing complaints and issues like safety, fair compensation for teachers and fair treatment for all kids (regardless of their location, age, background, etc) are also important to Segun. What Makes Segun Different from Other Candidates in the Race
Gwinnett County School District is the largest in Georgia with over 145 schools, 185,000 students and a $2 Billion budget. While it is a great school system, there is always room for improvement. Segun believes he can contribute to that improvement by bringing a different perspective to the table. Segun says he’s not only an educator but also an experienced Corporate America professional which is different from most school board candidates (who typically only have a background in education). His real world experience will help him solve real world problems that many school districts have when attempting to effectively train and prepare students for the workforce of the 21st Century and beyond.

Segun’s Advice for Other First Time Office Runners
Segun advises aspiring political candidates to always be civically engaged. He says civic engagement will help you better understand people’s needs and what’s going on in the community. Getting engaged early will give you an advantage. The people you meet from positive civic engagement are more likely to support you when you do decide to run for office. As a strong advocate in the African immigrant community he has led organizations in becoming civically engaged and participating in their communities. He is an active member of the Gwinnett County Democrats and a former President of the Nigerian-American Public Affairs Committee that partnered with The New Georgia Project on Voters Registration drives.
