Max Doggett is a native Detroiter with a deep history of entrepreneurship in his family. His Uncle Bernard Houston was the Founder and Owner of the popular restaurant Houston’s Grill back in the 60’s, located directly behind Barry Gordy’s home. (Berry Gordy is the Founder of Motown Records). Max started Safari Meats in Metro Food Land, a grocery store owned by James Hooks, located on Grand River and Fenkell. Mr. Hooks allowed Max to make chicken sausage, beef sausage and lamb sausage in his meat room, while also increasing his knowledge about the grocery industry. From that experience he decided to take all of the knowledge gained and leverage it to take Safari Meats to the next level.

Safari Meats is Coming to Meijer at Woodward Corner Market
After 7 years of challenges, Safari Meats was able to sell and market their products at the historical Eastern Market in Detroit. This also helped the company gain the attention of consumers from across the U.S. and globally. This got the attention of retail chain grocery store, Meijer. The KICK’N Chicken Sausage Links and Diced Chicken will be available for purchase through Meijer at Woodward Corner Market (30955 Woodward Ave #305, Royal Oak, MI 48073). Max will be hosting a tasting demo sometime in February and March 2020 at this location (call the store at (248) 955-1041 for details). He’s not stopping there. His goal is to become a global supplier offering his products to small and big box organizations.

Woodward Market was created by Meijer and is a new neighborhood grocery store that supports local food suppliers by offering them the opportunity to have their products sold in the store. Residents from Birmingham, Berkley, Royal Oak and other surrounding areas will have access to low cost, health conscious food items from local farmers, artisans and food suppliers. Safari Meats will be amongst those items.

Max’s Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs
Max says it’s important to understand your SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats). He also says it’s important to know your numbers (i.e. expenses and liabilities, etc). He suggests taking it slow– don’t rush or move too fast, that’s how huge mistakes are made. He says most people look for instant gratification but you must be patient and in it for the long haul. He also says you should also measure your results by your own standards and no one else’s.
Lastly, he advises not to waste your time with people who are not serious about your business or truly understand how it works. If you hire consultants to assist you in the development of the business, verify their track record (in your industry). This will guarantee you aren’t wasting your time with someone who can’t effectively help you.
